Makia’s journey: Finding strength and independence with LifeSet

Mar 26, 2025 | Blog, LifeSet

For Makia, the path from foster care to adulthood was filled with roadblocks. At 12 years old, Makia entered the child welfare system and moved between different foster homes, never quite finding stability and guidance.

“I turned 18, but I didn’t learn many life skills in the foster homes I was in,” she said.

Makia first started working with her LifeSet specialists soon after she aged out of state care.

“I was working different jobs, trying to get my [commercial driving] permit and just getting my head on straight,” she said. “Things weren’t working out, but LifeSet gave me the extra support I needed.”

Makia’s journey to adulthood wasn’t always easy, but she never stopped pushing forward. With the encouragement of her LifeSet specialists, Makia learned how to apply for housing, manage her finances and build a stable future. She recently secured her own apartment.

“I didn’t even know you had to put a deposit down for an apartment,” she said “They helped me through all the paperwork. It was overwhelming, but having someone to guide me made all the difference.”

Makia also got her commercial driver’s permit and is working toward earning her license (CDL). “All of this happened in just the last few days, and it’s been a blessing,” she said.

Motherhood has also played a significant role in shaping Makia’s outlook on life. With a four-month-old son, she’s more determined than ever to break generational cycles and create a better future for her child.

“Being a mom has taught me patience and given me a whole new kind of love,” she said. “I want my child to always feel comfortable talking to me, something I didn’t always have growing up.”

Makia’s advice to other young people in foster care is simple: never be afraid to ask for help.

A lot of kids have too much pride or are scared to reach out. But there are people out there who truly care and want to help. LifeSet gave me that support, and I’m so grateful.

Now, Makia is setting her sights on the future. She’s actively job -hunting, planning a move to Florida this summer and beginning a new life with her son.

“I still see myself doing something great,” Makia said. “I’ve been given a second chance, and I’m going to make the most of it.”

As her journey takes her beyond the LifeSet program, Makia stands as a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of having the right support at the right time.

“LifeSet is very close to my heart because my specialists have molded me into the woman I am today.”
