Youth Villages Walk for Independence raises $33,500 to help at-risk young adults

Nov 24, 2021 | Blog, LifeSet

In September, 175 walkers virtually traveled across America to raise awareness and funds to support the Youth Villages LifeSet program in the Walk for Independence. Teams of 10 competed for furthest distance walked, highest average daily miles and most dollars raised. Together, participants took more than 12 million steps and walked 5,411 miles from our Woburn, Massachusetts, office to the Youth Villages headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee!

In just eight days, the Walk for Independence raised $33,500 to support the important work of LifeSet. We are grateful to our presenting sponsor, Atreides Management, LP, a Boston-based hedge fund, for their generous gift to help more young adults get access to this life-changing service.

“We were happy to support LifeSet and the Walk for Independence,” said Cat Draper, an employee at Atreides Management, LP. “It was the perfect way to have a team-bonding activity that could span between those still remote and those in the office and have an impact on our community.”

Across the United States, 20,000 young adults age out of foster care each year, and LifeSet is the bridge from foster care to successful adulthood that helps these young people achieve independence. This population struggles to find work, meet the demands of school, secure suitable housing and properly address their mental health. LifeSet specialists work directly with these young adults to help them achieve their goals and live successfully.

The Walk for Independence was hosted by the Youth Villages Leadership Council, a group of talented and motivated individuals in the Greater Boston area that creates impactful volunteering, networking and awareness-building initiatives to further the Youth Villages mission.
