Backpack Heroes helps 1,300 youth across New England start school prepared

Sep 19, 2025 | Blog

For many families served by Youth Villages, the back-to-school season brings more worry than joy: Do I pay rent or buy school supplies? Fill the gas tank or purchase a new backpack? For caregivers already stretched thin, the growing list of school supplies can feel overwhelming.

This year, thanks to Backpack Heroes, more than 1,300 youth across Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine and Rhode Island walked into school ready to learn with brand-new backpacks filled with school supplies. Originally set out to provide backpacks for 900 youth, we reached 1,300 due to the incredible generosity of our community, which raised nearly $10,000 and made 336 Amazon Wish List purchases to keep supplies flowing.

Over the course of four volunteer days, hundreds of handwritten cards with messages like “You’ve got this!” and “Good luck on your first day!” were tucked into backpacks, reminding youth that even in uncertain times, they are not alone.

When I opened my backpack, I couldn’t believe everything inside. I felt like I was ready for school for the first time. It made me excited instead of nervous.

This effort was made possible by 27 corporate partners, countless individual donors and dedicated volunteers who packed each bag with care. SBLI generously donated their space so we could host our workshop, making a large effort feel personal and connected. Our friends at Two Men and a Truck ensured every backpack reached its destination, delivering to eight Youth Villages offices across the region.

These backpacks represented more than school supplies. They were stability in a moment of instability. Relief for parents. Encouragement for kids who are trying to stay focused in the middle of hard circumstances.

For many families, that backpack meant fewer impossible choices between essentials. For their kids, it meant walking into the classroom with confidence. That’s what Backpack Heroes is about, removing barriers big and small that can have a lasting impact.

If this resonates with you, there are more opportunities to give back. Our Holiday Heroes campaign kicks off in November and we’d love for you to join us. Reach out to Sam Tyler at samantha.tyler@youthvillages.org to learn how you can make the holiday season brighter.
